The Dutch Look to Recognize Three or More Parents For One Child

“I think my friends are a little jealous, because I’ve got two mummies and two daddies and they’ve only got two parents,” says Simon, 6, squirming with his brother Joaquin, 3, on the knees of their four gay parents. This quote comes from a child who is being raised by two couples – two gay couples.

The Netherlands, who was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex unions is now looking ahead to what they refer to as “pink” families. The Dutch justice ministry is about to commission a report examining the possibility of recognizing three parents or more for one child.

“We need to broaden the concept (of what is a family), no longer can you see parenting as a purely biological link or say that a child can only have two parents,” said Green lawmaker LiesbethVan Tongeren, saying there are between 20,000 and 25,000 children living in “pink” families in the Netherlands. And it’s not only for the protection of “pink” families. This new move could also work in favor of step-parents who are just as much a part of a child’s life.

It’s 2013 and more and more types of families are emerging and should be recognized. With the Netherlands being so forward and progressive, this is sure to happen and hopefully inspire other countries to follow. To read the full article, click here.
