Finding the Right Parenting Partner Takes Time

Once you have committed to finding a parenting partner to raise a child with together, you need to take your time to find the right match. This piece of advice may come off as obvious or as a no brainer, but the truth of the matter is that when you are finally are ready to take the next step in your life and be a parent, you may experience excitement and be anxious to get started. Only you can determine the proper length of time in getting to know someone before entering into a parenting partnership, but as a general rule of thumb, a minimum of six months is recommended. There’s a lot you need to discuss and get to know about your potential partner, so take time in doing so. A lot can happen in a short period of time and you may come to realize that it’s not a perfect match, so it’s best to always proceed with caution and not let your overwhelming feelings of wanting a child take over.

A parenting partnership first and foremost is a friendship. Besides good personal chemistry, a true bond between partners needs to be formed. Being able to always be honest and communicate frequently is a must. Spending time together and being comfortable with your partner will help strengthen or form a friendship.  And don’t be disappointed if after some time it’s just not the right match. The best interest of a child is in the balance so being firm with yourself and your feelings needs to take priority.
