The Origins of Parenting Partnerships

The term co-parenting stems from two people, sharing the responsibility of a child. In most cases, those who are co-parenting were at one time romantically involved and for whatever reason, are no longer in a romantic relationship, but have decided to continue to work together to raise their child. It’s truly a term that has been associated with divorce. Fortunately, these once couples are willing to come together to form the best parenting plan for their children and realize that working together has better overall results in raising their child. In recent years, co-parenting has not only been associated with once romantic couples, but two people in general–any two people who have decided to share the responsibilities of raising a child.

With so many new types of “modern families,” co-parenting is no longer just for divorced or broken-up couples. And the term, “co-parenting” has morphed into parenting partnerships. People are now creating these new parenting partnerships from the original model or example of co-parents. Raising a child with someone no longer requires the prerequisite of having once been in a romantic relationship with your partner. Lets be honest, parenting partnerships have always been around, but we just didn’t openly talk about them. But things are different now and people are changing their perceptions of what defines a “family.” So lets learn from the examples set from the original co-parents. If you are considering entering into a parenting partnership, take your time and do your research. Think about what would work and what wouldn’t work. This is an opportunity to forge a partnership with someone step by step and essentially come up with the terms of the partnership and how you will raise your child together, before there even is a child.
