I live in the U.S. and I have been speaking with a prospective co-parent who lives in Spain. If she were to raise our child there does anyone know if our child would have joint US and Spanish citizenship?

Hi there,

I think the issue of cross-border co-parenting is a very relevant one.

I myself am in the early stages of the process with someone who lives in Mexico.

In addition to the great resources that this website provides, I found these other links pertaining to cross-border parenting...

The lady who runs this site is a mediator and she seems to have some experience in international family law mediation:

Here is a sample international parenting plan that she discusses:
http://divorcethatworks.com/2013/07/09/an-international-parenting-plan-for-hannah/

And here's a related post that addresses the cross-border/long-distance aspect of co-parenting, beyond what the sample Co-Parenting Agreement given by Family by Design may cover:

Additionally, something to keep in mind in cases of international co-parenting, is the (sad) possibility that one parent may choose to abduct/detain the child in their own country, against the wishes and/or custodial rights of the other parent. There is an international treaty signed by many countries on this matter called the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hague_Convention_on_the_Civil_Aspects_of_International_Child_Abduction

It is good to know whether the countries the co-parents are from are parties to this treaty. Spain is. So is Mexico although unfortunately they have been exhibiting gross patterns of non-compliance with treaty provisions.

Another relevant website I found re: cross-border co-parenting is:

Good luck everybody!
