Tips From Arranged Marriages?

An interesting New York Times article recently caught our attention. The author discusses lessons that  can essentially be learned from arranged marriages. So what do arranged marriages and parenting partnerships have in common? The truth is, the common ground we found particularly interesting includes the time, research and preparation the parents took before selecting partners for their children.

“In the secular world, a lot of the times a couple will fall in love with each other and then at that point they lose objectivity,” said Rabbi Steven Weil, the executive vice president at the Orthodox Union in New York. In arranged marriages, however, “there is a lot of homework, a lot of energy spent, before a young man and woman fall in love with each other. For that reason, the parents are involved. But obviously it’s the decision of the young man and woman, but a parent knows a child.” To read the article, click here.

The same applies when searching for the perfect parenting partner. Seeking out the right person, getting to know them, and doing your research is key to a successful partnership. It’s important to know everything about your partner first and be that detective always searching for any “deal breakers.” Of course we can’t anticipate everything, but being open and honest with potential partners about everything and anything will make the search a lot smoother.
